One of the most powerful scriptures in the Bible comes to us from Matthew 14:16-17, it reads (16) But Jesus said to them “They do not need to go away. You give something to eat.” (17) And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”
Here Jesus commands his disciples to respond to the needs of the multitude. He is speaking those same words to us today. Nothing compels me to service more than seeing hungry people with no food to eat.
For the last 19 years our ministry has been moved by these words. “You give them something to eat.”
The heart of compassion is what moved Jesus here and it is what should move us today. The servants heart should compel us to do something about those who are hungry and without hope. It should move us to action, compel us to do something about those who might go to bed hungry tonight. As we respond to the needs of others, God meets our needs.
As our economy seems to worsen and the numbers of people we are serving increase it becomes apparent that a servant’s heart is what needs to drive us to meet the needs of those God sends to us. The bible tells us “No greater joy than a man lay down his life for a friend.” Today let’s grasp the heart of a servant and “give them something to eat.” May God richly bless your servanthood.
