I have been blessed to be able to work in the social work field for 12 years, the last 8 of them have been in my family's homeless ministry. I will be the first to admit that lately with the opening of our homeless veterans building and all the administrative work that needed to be done that I have not spent as much time with those in need as I have in the past and the thought of going into work
to a pile of paperwork and reports that need to be done has not been to appealing.
I was at MOHMS Place late over the weekend and I had to go to the kitchen and decided to walk through our dining hall completely forgetting that when our shelter is full we sleep additional people on mats in the dining hall, when I opened the door my breathe was taken away to see at least an additional 50 men peacefully sleeping on mats on the ground. Tears started to flow down my face to see a young man no older than 18 laying on the mat with his glasses next to him, all his worldly goods in a small bag at his feet and a blanket he must carry around with him held tightly at his chest , my mind immediately went to my little boy who was safely at home tucked into bed. Thoughts of my little boy laying alone on a mat at what should be the greatest and most exciting time in his life was too overwhelming to bear.
I was instantly reminded about how important it is to love people and how God put all these people in our life so we can help restore them, speak life into them and be the family and support that they need at the lowest point in their life. Our job as Christians is not to turn our heads when a brother is in need, judge others, wait until people have it all together before we help but to meet people where they are at, encourage them, speak life into them and most importantly LOVE them . Change does not come because of hate but only through the precious blood and love of Jesus. I am so excited to go to work tomorrow and not only help that young man but all the others that I am able to serve.
The Bible says do not grow weary while doing good, so i want to encourage all those serving the hurting and those in need to smile and know you really are making a difference. To those hurting , know you are loved! Jesus died for YOU and people are dedicating their whole life to help you. Finally to those who want to help I encourage you to get involved with a local charity. (I know a good one;)
When you help others your big problems in life suddenly don't seem so big at all.
